Greenhilt Trainee

Another new one for Magic: the Gathering. This guy and Mindcrank are still the two smallest paintings I've ever done for Magic. While the choice to paint them at a smaller size was initially made for the sake of speed, it was interesting to see the effect that it had on the final product. I feel like it forced me to be a little more decisive than I would have been. Greenhilt Trainee, 9 x 12 in., oil on masonite.

  1. Nasty looking weapon to be giving a 'trainee'!

  2. Another awesome piece! I'm constantly impressed with your lighting and sense of atmosphere. On a somewhat related note.. Chris, you should make it out to the Tacoma Museum of Art. They have an amazing Norman Rockwell exhibit going on till the end of May. It wouldn't be that far from Portland. You'll love it.

  3. What I love most about your work is your mastery of oil as a medium in the context of fantasy and scifi stuff, man. You easily compete with all the digital guys out there with some legit texture and lighting techniques.
Wizards is lucky to have you! You give hope to all us traditional painters out there, heheh.

  4. Thanks guys!

EvilDM - I know, weird terminology right?

Vinod - Thanks man! I hope I get the chance to check it out. I'm actually in eastern WA now, back in my tiny home-town for the time being so it's a little more of a trek but my brother in law lives in Tacoma so I might make it...

Moe - Thanks for all the kind words, it's good to hear from a fellow paint-slinger.

  6. Wow... I am envious. This is amazing. I especially love how the bright contrasts with the background. Wonderfully done.
