Here's another one from the new Magic set. Her art description basically sounded like a fantasy version of Judge Dredd...if he was a wizard, obsessed with the law almost to the point of zealotry. This was one of those rare pieces that came together really easily and wound up really close to the way I saw her in my mind when I began.

Do you photograph these paintings, or scan them? Oil on masonite is really hard to photograph, in my experience, without getting a reflection. But these are so flawless they look digital. Great work, as always!
ReplyDeleteI love the lighting in the painting and her golden eyes.
ReplyDeleteThanks guys! I do photograph my work myself, I'm a bit of an OCD case when it comes to digitizing and color correcting my work. Reflections are definitely the major hurdle but you can avoid them by setting up your lights far on either side of your painting so the light hits the painting at a really steep angle and reflects toward the other side of the painting instead of the camera. I also hang a black blanket behind me to cut down on ambient reflections and I use a polarizing filter on the camera and polarizing gels in front of the lights. It sounds like a lot but it's really just a few simple tricks.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful piece man. Bit what's the deal with the hand prints on the orb? It's a cool detail.
ReplyDeleteThanks Matt! The orb's got her newest prisoner in it, the hand prints are supposed to be reminiscent of touching a foggy window.
