Latest Addition to the Skull Collection - American Badger

It's been a while since I did one of these posts so I've got a few to catch up on but here's the latest. Honestly before I saw this thing on ebay I had now idea what a badger skull would look like but how great is this thing? To my surprise they look almost exactly like miniature grizzly bear skulls. Anyway, I figured it would come in handy for reference sooner or later so I snapped it up.

New MtG Art and Ashen Rider now up on Ebay!

Ashen Rider - 14 x 18 in., oil on masonite

Hey everyone! Sorry for the long wait, between working and traveling the old blog has been sadly neglected over the past couple of months. Anyway, I had an amazing time last week at IlluXCon in Allentown, PA. So much incredible original art I thought my eyes were gonna wear out and the new venue is fantastic. I highly recommend checking it out next year if you haven't already.

Alright, first up we have Ashen Rider. I had a ton of fun working on this one, I couldn't get those Meatloaf 'Bat out of Hell' album covers out of my head the whole time I was working on it. The concept is similar, she's traveling to the plane of the living from the underworld. The original for this one is currently up on Ebay, if you're interested check it out here.

Voyage's End - 14 x 18 in., oil on masonite

This next one shows the edge of the world of Theros and an unfortunate sailor who survived a shipwreck only to wind up here. I don't get a lot of opportunities to do more conceptual work like this but I really like doing this kind of stuff, something about the combination of such a serene scene with a really ominous second read when you look closely.

New MtG Art + Nylea up on Ebay!

Nylea, Goddess of the Hunt - 14 x 18 in, oil on masonite.

This piece and the pic below of the gorgon are both from the upcoming Greek-influenced MtG set called Theros. This set was a ton of fun and I'm really looking forward to being able to show more work from it. By the way, the original art for Nylea up there is currently up on Ebay, if you're interested you can check out the auction here

Kalonian Hydra - 14 x 18 in, oil on masonite.

...so far the name hasn't been spoiled for this one.

Path of Bravery

Path of Bravery - 14 x 18 in., oil on masonite

Here's a new one from the upcoming Magic: the Gathering set. I really had fun on this one, it's such a classic fantasy image with the nights and everything. Working on it I found myself thinking a lot of the artists I looked at as a kid, Frazetta and Jon Howe in particular.

Lord of the Rings: the Black Riders

Black Riders - 14 x 36 in., oil on masonite

Hey everyone! Apologies for the absence, between moving and getting ready for the Spectrum show last weekend things have been completely crazy around here.

Here's my latest piece for Fantasy Flight Games. It's box art for their Lord of the Rings card game, with this expansion focusing on the Black Riders. This one was quite a challenge in the beginning, oddly enough I haven't been asked to paint a lot of night scenes so I really had to think about how to approach this one, especially when it came to the color. I wound up focusing on the bluish light of the moon as the main source of color and moving out from there. It seemed to heighten the sense of dread and fear that the scene needed.

(As a side note, unlike the first two this one IS for sale so if you're interested shoot me an email)

Browbeat

 Browbeat - 12 x 16 in., oil on masonite

Here's a now one for Magic, the Gathering. As you can imagine, the art request for this one sounded pretty odd on the first read. Eventually though, I really got into the idea of the poor guy cowering before this terrifying image in the sky, and had a lot of fun figuring out how to make the idea work.

Lord of the Void

Lord of the Void - 12 x 16 in., oil on masonite

Here's the first of my art from Gatecrash, the new Magic: the Gathering set. The art request asked for a demon that leads a swarm of lesser monsters through the city-world of Ravnica, causing mayhem as they go.

Early on I decided to use their glowing eyes as a kind of unifying element, to give the sense that they're all under his spell, or at least connected in some way. The biggest challenge was working all those critters in around him and still having their placement feel natural, especially since his silhouette is so complex. All told though, this guy was a lot of fun to paint.
