It's been a while so this is a combo-post. The first thing is that I just added a new section to my website devoted to original art so anyone that's interested can check it out here. There's tons of stuff on there and if you're looking for a deal check out the WoW stuff :).

The second thing has to do with personal work. I've been focusing on cutting out some time for my own projects over the last few months and it's been a great experience, it's been way too long since I worked on my own stuff and I've really enjoyed blowing out the cobwebs so to speak. Anyway, here's the first one. I wanted to start with a bang so I dove into something big.

Hey Everyone! Here's the first of my stuff from the upcoming Magic the Gathering set. The idea was to capture that moment (presumably your last) when you lock eyes with a gorgon and are turned to stone. After kicking around a few ideas for this one I wound up looking at some Vermeer paintings and realized how fun it would be to make it a bit of an homage to Vermeer's "Girl with a Pearl Earring", I've always loved that painting of his in particular and couldn't resist the idea. I also had to include the 'Nyx' starfield effect that a lot characters have in this set so it wound up being pretty challenging to get all of the necessary elements to work together.

It's been a while since I did one of these posts so I've got a few to catch up on but here's the latest. Honestly before I saw this thing on ebay I had now idea what a badger skull would look like but how great is this thing? To my surprise they look almost exactly like miniature grizzly bear skulls. Anyway, I figured it would come in handy for reference sooner or later so I snapped it up.

Hey everyone! Sorry for the long wait, between working and traveling the old blog has been sadly neglected over the past couple of months. Anyway, I had an amazing time last week at IlluXCon in Allentown, PA. So much incredible original art I thought my eyes were gonna wear out and the new venue is fantastic. I highly recommend checking it out next year if you haven't already.

Alright, first up we have Ashen Rider. I had a ton of fun working on this one, I couldn't get those Meatloaf 'Bat out of Hell' album covers out of my head the whole time I was working on it. The concept is similar, she's traveling to the plane of the living from the underworld. The original for this one is currently up on Ebay, if you're interested check it out here.

Voyage's End - 14 x 18 in., oil on masonite

This next one shows the edge of the world of Theros and an unfortunate sailor who survived a shipwreck only to wind up here. I don't get a lot of opportunities to do more conceptual work like this but I really like doing this kind of stuff, something about the combination of such a serene scene with a really ominous second read when you look closely.

This piece and the pic below of the gorgon are both from the upcoming Greek-influenced MtG set called Theros. This set was a ton of fun and I'm really looking forward to being able to show more work from it. By the way, the original art for Nylea up there is currently up on Ebay, if you're interested you can check out the auction here.

Here's my latest piece for Fantasy Flight Games. It's box art for their Lord of the Rings card game, with this expansion focusing on the Black Riders. This one was quite a challenge in the beginning, oddly enough I haven't been asked to paint a lot of night scenes so I really had to think about how to approach this one, especially when it came to the color. I wound up focusing on the bluish light of the moon as the main source of color and moving out from there. It seemed to heighten the sense of dread and fear that the scene needed.

(As a side note, unlike the first two this one IS for sale so if you're interested shoot me an email)

Hey Everyone! This one's been out for a while but I just realized I haven't posted it yet and since everyone's going to be in Hobbit-mode this weekend it seemed like a good time. It was done as packaging art for Fantasy Flight Games for one of their card games and it's the sequel to the earlier piece I did for them of the party leaving the Shire.

It was a serious challenge composing all those figures but in general I really enjoyed working on this one. As great as it was getting to do the first one, this scene is a lot more up my alley. It was a real kick getting to figure out what my interpretation of Smaug would look like, once I got that figured out and what I wanted to do with the lighting, everything else kind of fell into place.

Here's a detail shot:
More on this later but, long story short, I was asked a few months back to create new art for the Black Lotus (one of Magic: the Gathering's most famous cards). I was totally honored to do it and really enjoyed working on it. While the card won't ever be printed, from what I understand it will be the new look of the card for the Magic: the Gathering online game.

Anyway, because of the huge response to the art I wanted to give everyone a fair shot at owning the original. If you're interested, you can find it on eBay here.

Last year was my first time exhibiting there and I just about lost my mind between all the art and getting to meet a bunch of my art-gods. I'm really looking forward to doing it all over again and hopefully I'll see ya there!

Alright, moving on. The piece up top, which I'll be showing for the first time next weekend, is a book cover I did a while back for Tor Publishing. It was my first time working with them and I had a great time with it. The real challenge with this one was pulling off the value structure with so much going on, I spent a lot of time squinting at it trying to make sure the silhouette of the dragon stood out from the airship, etc.

This is my last one for the new Magic, the Gathering set, Return to Ravnica. I remember really wanting to get that sense of her just catching the last bit of daylight before diving down. The hardest bit was definitely figuring out how to treat the blues of her skin and clothes in that lighting situation without getting too muted.

If you're not familiar with Muddy Colors, it's got to be the best blog out there on the subject of fantastic art with a list of regular contributors that will make your head spin. Anyway, it was an honor to be asked and you can check out my post here.Chris Rahnhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04668299228206369877noreply@blogger.com2
