Sigarda, Host of Herons

Sigarda, Host of Herons - 12 x 16 in., oil on masonite

Another new one for Magic, the Gathering. She's the second angel I've done for them (the first was Jenara, Asura of War) and with this one I really wanted try my hand at glowing, backlit wings and the color effects that are involved. The weirdest part is how the color changes and darkens where the feathers overlap, not the easiest thing in oils it turns out (at least for me)

  2. I think you were totally successful in you endeavor to paint the back lit wings. The wings have a translucency around the edges that's so spot on.

  3. I've tried that whole back lit wing thing. It's not just you, it's a pain in the butt. I think you were more successful than I was at it as evidenced by the fact that I destroyed the piece I failed at and yours still exists.

  4. Thanks everyone!

Steve - I know the feeling, I plan on holding my own Gurney-style Gallery Flambeaux soon. I just need to get a hold of a parabolic mirror...

  5. Been searching for a better resolution of the art for reference, thank goodness for this.

And it's always nice to see workmanship in art that comes with seeing it in a clearer res. Specially of a subject you fancy (angels) :P
